Current evidence suggests that man first transitioned to agriculture ten thousand years ago, in modern-day Iraq. Even today, the earth in Iraq is remarkably fertile. A dense, dark green farmland serves as the backdrop to many of our old photographs, often with the Euphrates running behind the farmers in the pictures. But looking at the people who fill up my family’s albums isn’t easy.        Many of them were murdered.
